The Handmaid’s Tale, Station Eleven, Dune, The Peripheral, all tell the tale of a turn of events that changes the course of humanity. The job of a book about the future is to speculate, and thus may be cast out from the shelves of serious literature. But these novels help us imagine something worse or better ahead. They provide warnings, like in The Handmaid’s Tale, or hope in the face of hopelessness like in Station Eleven. They can show us how strange we can become, such as in The Peripheral, and mirror our world from afar, as in Dune.
